Wood Gasifier Fueling Conventional Gasoline Engine as Backup For Solar Power DIY Part 2

How do you build a gasifier.? A gasifier or as they are often called, gas producers, can be simply made from some sort of metal container or drum.  You need to be able to capture the exhaust of the small fire.  Some form of insulation could be of benefit.  Usually the drum is lined with fire bricks or fire clay.  A small fan to draw through the unit is useful during starting.

For any engine to work off this effectively for long periods without damage, the exhaust from the gasifier needs to be filtered and cleaned from carbon/ash particles as well as wood tar.  This is normally done by some sort of oil filled filter.  This filter obviously needs to be cleaned regularly.

In a solar power backup solution the engine will best drive a dc alternator to direct charge the batteries, but could drive a conventional AC alternator.  The wood usually needs to be cut up small, probably depending on the design of the gasifier.

I hope this is food for thought.
